Okay I admit it, I use to be scared of carbs- that was until Tara forced me to eat them and I noticed the difference in my body, energy and emotional eating change dramatically. I was finally fuelling my body right and carbs were a big part of that.
Yeah it’s true not everyone needs as many carbs as say me but I believe all people (plus research says so!) still need them. Personally, I think low carb and no carb diets are a cronk and unsustainable in the long run. But every body (pun intended) is different and some may respond better to less carbs whilst others prefer more.
But why do I get the scrunched up, hell no face when I suggested one lady may need to eat more carbs with the lifting she does.
This captures it perfectly.
Carbohydrates are essential for everyday living (for your brain to work properly!) and functioning, but even more important for athletes, exercises and those who generally like working it Carbs are our most readily available source of energy to be used for fuel and tissue synthesis such as building muscle (and building muscle is better because you burn more calories therefore can eat more and look better!). For instance if you’re on a low carb diet and you’re doing a BodyAttack class you may feel that you’re running out of fuel and it takes longer to refuel because of the lack or absence of carbs; or maybe your lifts have been suffering lately thanks to the lack of carbs?
But obviously like everything, carbs should come in moderation. Eating an excess of carbs is going to have the same effect as eating an excess of protein. Not all carbs are created equal either- so be smart with your carb choices. Whilst complex carbs are generally the way to do there is always a time and place for simple carbs.
But if you’re looking at me (reading me?) thinking ‘but I want to lose weight- and cutting carbs works.’ Yeah it does for about a few weeks tops, then things will go backwards and you’ll be worse off as you’ve got to reverse the damage you’ve done. If you want to lose weight make changes in all areas of your macros- fat, protein and carbs.
Remember knowledge is power, so don’t be scared of something because of some stupid fad diets or your best friend’s sister gained weight eating carbs.
