Eating Responsibly

Have you ever seen Super Size Me? That documentary where Morgan eats only McDonalds for 30 days straight. You know the one you’ve probably seen 839813 times but doesn’t get old? And the one that they use to pop in the VCR for the infamous HPE lessons back in the day.

Well the other night that was what the bf and I watched before heading to bed. I was actually surprised, although I’d seen it before, how much and how different it affected me today after everything I’ve been through. I am much more health and fitness conscious now then I was when I last saw it that’s for sure.

I was moved at how uneducated some people are about making healthy choices and it’s a sad realisation that we still live in (it seems we face one extreme after the other- where’s the balance people?). I also think it’s terrible that people sue the fast food companies. It’s not about blaming other people, you have the choice but you choose otherwise.

My boyfriend then said possibly the most enlightened thing he has ever said to me:

McDonalds and fast food isn’t the problem. It’s the people who can’t eat it responsibly.

You’ve heard about responsible drinking before right? Well what about responsible eating?

Yes we are bombarded with media advertisements, the colours have been selected to make us hungrier and every little thing has been done so to bring us in, make us eat more and keep us coming back. But you know what? It’s up to us. It’s up to you to eat responsibly.

Eat Responsibly

Eating responsibly ties in perfect with my current eating philosophy of moderation. It involves not ‘having to’ say no, but to take responsibility for what you’re eating. If that mean you’re eating McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner- then that’s YOUR responsibility. Whatever comes about because of that choice then that’s also your responsibility.

Hopefully by taking responsibility or by acknowledge that we are responsible for what we eat, we will make our food choices more wisely. Just like you can be responsible for eating just McDonalds all day, you can also be responsible for eating a healthy diet! Which responsibility would you prefer to have?

I hope I haven’t come off to brutal or blunt, but I really thought this was a powerful phenomenon that we often overlook. Plus it makes for a great talking topic!

It’s not about placing blame on the companies or the food, it’s about taking responsibility for what you eat and what you put in your body.
