Welcome to the third instalment of Michelle Bridges Mini Series (oh and welcome to hump day!). If you’ve missed the first two, you can read about them here:
Okay, so this post is all about change. During Michelle’s motivational talk she mentioned change. Something that has really stuck with me is how she said “What’s in your past, will be in your future- unless you’re willing to change now“. Basically, your past- the good and the bad, will also be your future if you continue to live and do as you currently are.
Once again I can see this thinking process being applied to a million different situations. Michelle was specifically talking about health and weight of course, and in this context it can hopefully be easily understood. If your past is full of extra (unwanted) weight, staying inside your shell and not experiencing life, or full of ice-cream (don’t mind if I do), then it will also be your future. Unless you change the patterns and habits (more to come on habits) now. This means- getting active, cutting down on the ice-cream, experiencing life and and taking risks. Unless we make changes in the present our futures will just be a repeat of the past.
Perhaps slightly more confusing to grasp is how it can be applied in other circumstances. In terms of mental health problems and specifically EDs, unless you choose to break free of the obsessive traits, the rules, restrictions and all the baggage from your past NOW, well… recovery will not be an option in your future. It’s about making the change now- not tomorrow or the next day. Every small change contributes to a different and better future- something that’s different from your past.
Some changes I want to make in the now (or in the process of doing):
- Cut ALL the negative self-talk.
- Love myself fully and unconditionally.
- Respect, nourish and listen to my body.
What are you going to change? What future are you after?
